The Brief

Wooden Spoon is the children’s charity of rugby, for whom RugbyTots, a longstanding client of PinPoint Media, were looking to raise an enormous sum of money for by challenging 40 of their franchisees to cycle 178 miles from London to Paris in just three days.

In order to help bolster fundraising efforts and raise the profile of the ride, Wooden Spoon wanted us to document the challenge over all three days, right up to the finish line at the Eiffel Tower.

The Challenge

Whilst Wooden Spoon had documented similar challenges in the past, for this project they wanted a video that could capture the struggle, the pain and the sacrifice these riders were making to raise money for the charity.

Epic Sport Relief mini-docs were the reference point and so we needed the right approach, equipment and crew to truly imbed ourselves within the peloton and capture every bead of sweat along the way.

The Solution

We opted for a lightweight four-man crew, all packed into a Land Rover Discovery, which was the perfect tracking car to help us navigate in and amongst the peloton throughout the windy country roads of Southern England, the gorgeous hills of Northern France and fairly chaotic streets of Paris!

We had our A camera rigged up on the trusty Movi Pro, with the Discovery’s split tail-gate allowing us to operate with ease. Our B camera was in a lightweight handheld rig, to allow us to dart out during water breaks or whenever there was a stoppage on the road.

Alongside our roaming audio set-up, these rigs meant that we never missed a trick out on the road and were able to react on-the-fly to the story that was unfolding before us.

A 40-degree heatwave across both England and France for all three days of the ride meant that that story certainly was an eventful one!

We were therefore able to create a whole suite of content covering the challenge, including a longform mini-doc, a shorter condensed overview, individual race day edits and a series of snappy social media stings to help drive traffic towards the main piece.

This gave Wooden Spoon the versatility to maximise their distribution strategy and in turn aid them in raising over £200,000!

“Very happy with this video.”
