Metaverse, Spatial & Our Virtual Reality Office

“To be able to experimentally test technology with a clear focus on wellbeing has been very exciting. It’s clear there’s a need for virtual, mixed and augmented reality and we as a business are well placed to guide our clients through the labyrinth of possibilities”

The Brief

We were facing Zoom fatigue, there’s only so many virtual calls as a ‘team’ we can take that are productive. We wanted to explore something fun, something that we could do with colleagues that are spread across the world.

Companies are looking to identify if there is a way that we can bring team members together in a centralised location that feels ‘normal’. Not least for the benefit of work collaborations but  mental health and wellbeing reasons also. Naturally Zoom, Teams and Google Meet didn’t cut it.

The Challenge

The focus groups we put together internally generated a huge amount of interest in developing our own virtual office. As a business we’re convinced that the Metaverse will be something that is widely used in the not too distant future, but what, when and how is still to be seen. We wanted to discover the answers to these questions so that we could pass them onto our clients.

It was whilst exploring this that we developed our own virtual space using Unreal Engine on Spatial.io. Developing it from scratch, speccing and designing the room as well as adding breakout immersive areas for avatars and team members to relax in, we built upon our initial problem of collaboration and well being and eradicated it.

The Outcome

Still being developed we’ve yet to list the virtual office publicly on Spatial.io yet. We still feel we’ve work to do within it to get it to a level we’re satisfied publicly with. We have, however, experienced uplift in users within the business. The ability to utilise the platform through phones, laptops or virtual reality headsets, speak with your normal voice yet communicate with a virtual avatar, does give an odd sensation but one that users and colleagues become accustomed to over time. With the introduction of Spatial audio, users can walk into rooms or past other colleagues and the sound adjusts as if it were in person. This adds to the level of authenticity and usability
