Glass Door were hosting their annual Sleep Out event to raise money to support homelessness. Involving hundreds of people nationwide sleeping out in their gardens and local community centres, the main event was at Duke of York Square in Chelsea, London, where 300 people planned to sleep out with a wide variety of entertainment and celebrity appearances throughout the evening.
Due to the Covid Pandemic, the event had to be live streamed on Glass Door’s website and other social media to maximise exposure for fund-raising whilst adhering to strict COVID regulations. The client also needed a copy of the stream in full, a highlights edit and some of the key sections provided as separate videos for future use and promotion.
Due to government restrictions, Sleep Out 2020 went fully virtual and was broadcast live from Duke of York Square. Instead of sleeping out at the square as planned everyone had to sleep from home with only celebrity guests appearing at the square.
We went out and about and did live Zoom calls from people sleeping out in their gardens creating a Children In Need type production. The aim was for people to share the stream on social media. We produced a show out of what was previously a fundraising event, coming up with the format, pulling it together, creating graphics and even helping the presenters.
We created an engaging format to make people feel part of the community despite being at separate locations. We also built a simple ‘outdoor studio’ from an area in the square that was capable of coping with all the unpredictable demands of live broadcasting.
We worked with the venue and Glass Door to pull together some graphical backdrops and seating to provide a Comic Relief style broadcast, with a central studio location where Q&A could be hosted, pre-recorded content could be shown and from where we could go live to other locations.
